Preparing Students for Secondary School and Beyond
As students approach secondary school, it is crucial to master reading, mathematics, and writing skills to ensure academic success in GCSE and IGCSE examinations.
English: Reading and Writing
Strong reading comprehension skills are essential at this stage. Students should be able to read fluently, with a target reading rate of approximately 200 words per minute, and extract key information, analyse texts critically, and make inferences. Advanced reading skills form the foundation for success across all subjects, including writing, science, and humanities.
Writing skills also become increasingly important. By secondary school, students are expected to produce multi-paragraph essays with clear structure, logical flow, and accurate grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Creative and analytical writing is developed further, with an emphasis on essay planning, argument development, and research-based assignments. Strong reading comprehension directly supports these writing tasks, ensuring students can engage with complex ideas and communicate effectively.
Mathematics
Secondary school marks the critical transition from basic arithmetic to algebra and higher-level mathematics. Students must have a solid understanding of fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, integers, geometric figures, equations, and word problems. Mastery of these pre-algebra skills is essential, as gaps in understanding are the most common reason for difficulty in GCSE-level maths.
Our tutors focus on reinforcing these fundamental concepts while introducing more advanced problem-solving and reasoning skills, ensuring students are well-prepared for Key Stage 3 and GCSE mathematics.
Exam Preparation
At Knowledge & Skills Hub, we support students preparing for GCSE, IGCSE, and MYP assessments across most subjects. For students considering further academic pathways abroad or in the UK, we also provide SAT exam preparation, helping learners achieve their full potential and meet the demands of competitive secondary and higher education.
