Building Strong Foundations for Academic Success
At Knowledge & Skills Hub, we understand that strong reading, writing, and mathematics skills are the foundation of every student’s academic success. Our programmes are fully aligned with the UK National Curriculum, ensuring students develop the essential skills they need to thrive at every stage of their education.
Early Years (Pre-Kindergarten – Year 2)
Reading is the cornerstone of learning. In the early years, students focus on recognising letters, understanding sounds, and developing phonics skills, which are critical for reading fluency. Early mastery of these skills ensures a smooth transition into Key Stage 1, where reading, comprehension, and vocabulary development become central to learning.
Similarly, in mathematics, students focus on basic number skills — including addition, subtraction, and early multiplication. These foundational skills are crucial for later concepts such as fractions, decimals, and problem-solving.
Key Stage 1 & Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 1–3)
Years 1–3 are the “learning to read” years. Students consolidate phonics and decoding skills, expand their vocabulary, and develop comprehension strategies. These abilities are essential for reading fluently and understanding texts independently.
In writing, students begin to form complete sentences, use proper punctuation, and construct short paragraphs. They also learn to express ideas clearly and begin developing creativity in their writing.
Mathematics in these years focuses on solidifying number facts, introducing place value, and developing problem-solving skills, preparing students for more complex topics in later years.
Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 4–6)
By Year 4, students transition from “learning to read” to reading to learn. They are expected to read independently, extract information, and critically analyse texts. Fluency, comprehension, and advanced vocabulary enable students to engage with increasingly complex texts. By the end of Year 6, students are typically reading at or above their age-related expectations, preparing them for secondary school challenges.
In mathematics, students tackle fractions, decimals, percentages, and more advanced problem-solving. Mastery of these concepts is essential for success in pre-algebra and higher-level maths in secondary school.
Writing skills continue to develop, with students learning to craft structured paragraphs, use cohesive devices, and develop introductions and conclusions. They are encouraged to express ideas creatively while maintaining clarity and organisation, ensuring they are ready for the demands of secondary education.
Preparing Students for Future Success
By carefully building skills at each stage, Knowledge & Skills Hub ensures students are confident, independent learners ready to tackle the challenges of secondary school and beyond. Our structured approach to reading, writing, and mathematics lays a solid foundation for academic excellence, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
